Fantastic and
immensely appreciated it seems from the feedback received both from
teachers and
pupils. This resource is produced by
Bongo LLP for WebPlay and funded by the Arts Council.
Bongo LLP has designed and developed the
web based resources and a
film for WebPlay, and continues to develop new
Whiteboard products for them.
Bongo LLP provided the complete solution from concept to delivery.
What is it? It's an
electronic resource that
promotes literacy as its educational remit, but provides masses of hands-on
drama fun and pupil participation as the carrot to painless learning. Children get to write their own plays and perform them as an inclusive exercise in pupil co-operation.
Why does it work so well? The material is very
well-written and attracts children's attention immediately with a sketch performed by actors. This is the starting point for an enthusiastic tour of language, sound, body-language, stage performance, stage management and of course, writing. Without realising it, pupils are learning and progressing with literacy skills through drama. Through this introduction to drama, they develop an interest in live theatre and may even create some of tomorrow's theatre audience.
Teachers love using it because the resource provides fantastic teachers' notes, lesson plans and further ideas. They see their pupils'
motivation and
enthusiasm while they are doing the resource which translates into
self-confidence and a
sense of achievement. The resource captures the imagination of pupils and
makes learning fun. It's a
breakthrough in the
concept of work through play.
The role of
drama in children's development is well-known, but has been under-utilised as a fully-integrated learning tool to promote literacy.
Electronic resources such as Webplay are in great demand by both pupils and teachers, not as an end-of-term 'treat', but as an integral aid to fulfilling the requirements of the
National Curriculum. No child is left behind struggling with texts and improbable constructs, Webplay offers a
practical solution to literacy which appeals to pupils
across intelligence levels and
cultural background.
It's fun, and it works.
